Gaston Bachelard stated in his book "The Flame of a Candle" (1961), "Among all the objects in the world that evoke daydreaming, the candle flame is the most splendid image generator. It compels us to imagine." Even today, if you visit many churches and temples, you'll find candle flames illuminating the space, and Bachelard's words remain true in that candle flames have the power to evoke any emotion or mental state within us. I often liken candle flames to a needle. When pricked by a needle, it hurts, but it's not the pain from the needle itself that we feel; rather, it's our skin being pricked by it that creates the sensation of pain. Similarly, candle flames don't transmit specific emotional states themselves; rather, by gazing at them, we evoke emotional responses within ourselves I wanted to visually demonstrate this latent energy of candle flames to the audience. However, instead of merely expressing it visually, I aimed to prove its actual existence and explore its potential applications using scientific devices. Thus, I began developing <Candle Generator>, which converts the small heat of candle flames into actual energy. This scientific approach is also evident in another project called "<Is of>," where I strive not to get lost in excessive relativism in my art but rather hope it aligns with some universal truth I pursue. In the exhibition hall, there are 10 candle generators and 1 egg incubator. The small heat from the candle flames is converted into potential energy with a voltage difference by the candle generators, which is then manifested as heat and kinetic energy through the egg incubator, ultimately utilized as energy to hatch fertilized eggs. After approximately 20-25 days, the chicks eventually hatch, and the newly hatched chicks are raised by me personally. The machines are adorned with sculptures reminiscent of those found in museums or archaeological sites, and the surfaces have subtle yellow hues. I aimed to create machines that evoke a sense of being protected by some gentle and warm presence, while remaining mechanically robust. Although I somewhat agree with the modernist architect Adolf Loos's declaration that "ornament is crime," I believe that sometimes ornamentation can serve a role beyond the mere functionality of a machine.
